What is Organic?
We understand organic labelling can be confusing. We also know many brands feature “organic” on their label yet contain synthetic chemical additives in their products. In Australia, the term ‘organic’ is not regulated. For this reason, it is important to always read ingredient lists and look for certification logos.
Goods that are considered to be organic are often natural products that use some certified organic ingredients. The amount of organic ingredients can vary anywhere from 10 – 70% and will depend on the product in question. This is where the line becomes blurry and we need to ask more questions about the product and brand.
Products that are certified organic have been produced without the use of synthetic chemicals at any stage, from growth of raw materials to the creation of the product. The Australian Organic Standard requires that 95% or more of total ingredients are certified organic. The remaining ingredients must be natural and not available organically.
Products with a certified organic logo are produced without:
- Pesticides, herbicides and fungicides
- Genetic modification
- Animal testing
Products that are certified organic are:
- Synthetic chemical free
- Socially responsible
A multi-ingredient product that contains between 70 – 95% certified organic ingredients, must state on their label “made from organic ingredients” instead of “organic”. The remaining non-organic ingredients must be listed for approval in the Australian Organic Standard and not available organically.
